In the HU-GO electronic road toll system, the obligation to pay tolls applies to trucks and tractors (including tractor trucks) with a maximum total permissible weight over 3.5 tons, as well as vehicle trains composed of such vehicles and the towed trailer or semi-trailer.
The obligation to pay tolls under the HU-GO electronic toll system, which is proportional to the distance travelled, does not apply to passenger cars, buses, coaches, agricultural tractors and their trailers, slow vehicles, motorcycles, motor caravans, lorries with a maximum authorised weight of 3.5 tonnes and their trailers. The obligation to pay the toll for vehicles subject to the motorway toll system is regulated by Decree no. 45/2020 (XI.28.) of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology. No toll is payable in the HU-GO e-toll system for vehicles listed in Section 6 of Chapter II of Act LXVII of 2013 on distance-based tolls payable for the use of motorways, expressways and main roads (Exemption from the payment of the toll), and for lorries as defined in Government Decree 243/2013 (VI.30.), subject to certain conditions.
It depends on the number of axles, the environmental classification of the lorry, the category of the road (main road or expressway) and the distance travelled. For more information on tolls, please see the “About the amount of the toll” section under “General information” on the hu-go.hu website, and please click on the “Map” option for a map of toll roads and a list of road sections.
The toll is calculated on the basis of the distance travelled. This means that, if you drive onto a toll road with a vehicle subject to toll payment and then leave the road at the next exit, you will be charged for the whole section of road, regardless of the distance travelled. For more information on the toll road network, please visit the “General information” section of the hu-go.hu website, and for a map of toll roads and a list of road sections, please click on "Map".
Vehicle categories are defined by the number of axles. If a heavy goods vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tonnes has 2 axles, it is in category J2. If the lorry (including the trailer and the number of lift axles, if any) has 3 axles, it is classified in category J3, if it has 4 or more axles, it is classified in category J4. For the classification, the total number of axles of the lorry and its trailer must be taken into account, so the lowerable axle also counts in the raised position. The toll is calculated on the basis of the vehicle category, the environmental category or the road category, multiplied by the length of the toll sections.
The definition of the vehicle category also includes the lift axle of the lorry, whether it is in use or not.
This information is either numbered in the registration certificate of the lorry, box V.9, or included in the CEMT licence. On the hu-go.hu website, in menu item 6.1 under “Legislation in force/Services, operation"", you will find a table with the Euro classification for the numbering. * Vehicle categories are defined by the number of axles. If a heavy goods vehicle with 2 axles has a gross weight of more than 3.5 tonnes, it is in category J2. If the lorry (including the trailer and the number of lift axles, if any) has 3 axles, it is classified in category J3, if it has 4 or more axles, it is classified in category J4.
