Fines information

Avoiding penalties

The HU-GO system checks the existence of a valid road use right from 0 to 24 hours. In case of unauthorised use, the competent authority will impose an administrative fine. Responsibility can be taken by means of an on-the-spot stop-and-go check or on the basis of the principle of objective responsibility. The legislation takes account of the temporal nature of the unauthorised use, which allows the user to correct the problem within a short time after it is detected and thus avoid paying the increased fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What currencies can I use for payment?

All our locations offer cash and credit or debit card payment in all currencies accepted at the particular location. In Hegyeshalom, Rajka we can offer our customers Forint and Euro payments, and in our offices in Nagykerek and Tornyosnémeti the above mentioned options are complemented by Romanian Lei and Polish Zloty options.

How can I pay with a foreign credit or debit card?

You can pay with a foreign-issued credit or debit card at all locations throughout the country, but only in EUR, RON or PLN.

Can I request an invoice?

Yes, it is possible to request an invoice at all locations, please inform the sales representative before starting the transaction.

I did not ask for an invoice in time and my accountant asks for one, what is the solution?

The mandatory data provision to the NTCA does not allow the invoice to be issued retrospectively.

Who is subject to the HU-GO fee?

In the HU-GO electronic road toll system, the obligation to pay tolls applies to trucks and tractors (including tractor trucks) with a maximum total permissible weight over 3.5 tons, as well as vehicle trains composed of such vehicles and the towed trailer or semi-trailer.

Who is not subject to the HU-GO fee?

The obligation to pay tolls under the HU-GO electronic toll system, which is proportional to the distance travelled, does not apply to passenger cars, buses, coaches, agricultural tractors and their trailers, slow vehicles, motorcycles, motor caravans, lorries with a maximum authorised weight of 3.5 tonnes and their trailers. The obligation to pay the toll for vehicles subject to the motorway toll system is regulated by Decree no. 45/2020 (XI.28.) of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology. No toll is payable in the HU-GO e-toll system for vehicles listed in Section 6 of Chapter II of Act LXVII of 2013 on distance-based tolls payable for the use of motorways, expressways and main roads (Exemption from the payment of the toll), and for lorries as defined in Government Decree 243/2013 (VI.30.), subject to certain conditions.

How much does the toll cost?

It depends on the number of axles, the environmental classification of the lorry, the category of the road (main road or expressway) and the distance travelled. For more information on tolls, please see the “About the amount of the toll” section under “General information” on the hu-go.hu website, and please click on the “Map” option for a map of toll roads and a list of road sections.

What is the basis for toll calculation?

The toll is calculated on the basis of the distance travelled. This means that, if you drive onto a toll road with a vehicle subject to toll payment and then leave the road at the next exit, you will be charged for the whole section of road, regardless of the distance travelled. For more information on the toll road network, please visit the “General information” section of the hu-go.hu website, and for a map of toll roads and a list of road sections, please click on "Map".

How do I know which vehicle category (category J) I belong to?

Vehicle categories are defined by the number of axles. If a heavy goods vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tonnes has 2 axles, it is in category J2. If the lorry (including the trailer and the number of lift axles, if any) has 3 axles, it is classified in category J3, if it has 4 or more axles, it is classified in category J4. For the classification, the total number of axles of the lorry and its trailer must be taken into account, so the lowerable axle also counts in the raised position. The toll is calculated on the basis of the vehicle category, the environmental category or the road category, multiplied by the length of the toll sections.

If my vehicle has a lift axle but I don't lower it while driving, does that affect the J category?

The definition of the vehicle category also includes the lift axle of the lorry, whether it is in use or not.

How do I know which environmental class my lorry belongs to?

This information is either numbered in the registration certificate of the lorry, box V.9, or included in the CEMT licence. On the hu-go.hu website, in menu item 6.1 under “Legislation in force/Services, operation"", you will find a table with the Euro classification for the numbering. * Vehicle categories are defined by the number of axles. If a heavy goods vehicle with 2 axles has a gross weight of more than 3.5 tonnes, it is in category J2. If the lorry (including the trailer and the number of lift axles, if any) has 3 axles, it is classified in category J3, if it has 4 or more axles, it is classified in category J4.

How to declare tolls?

By means of an on-board unit (fixed installation or operated from cigarette lighter) or a pre-paid ticket.

Which fuel card can I pay with?

We offer SHELL and ROUTEX fuel card payment options for our customers at our locations.

What is a route ticket (viszonylati jegy)?

It is a prepaid road-use authorization available in the HU-GO system, valid for a specific toll road section (or sections), for a particular vehicle, in one direction, for a single use. The ticket grants road-use rights only after successful payment.

When must the ticket be purchased?

Always before entering the toll section. Advance purchase is not possible. Validity begins at the moment of payment.

How long is the route ticket valid?

Until 31 January 2025: valid from the day of purchase until the end of the following calendar day. From 1 February 2025: valid for 120 minutes from the time of purchase.

Where can I obtain information or handle a matter?

aplus.hu – detailed guides and practical examples. aPlus offices – at all border crossings (in-person assistance, ticket purchase, OBU support).

Is it possible to buy a return (round-trip) ticket?

Not in the classical sense. Technically, a round-trip route can be planned by entering the same starting and ending points and inserting an intermediate waypoint. Each direction must be checked separately, and the vehicle must follow the designated route strictly.

Can the route ticket be refunded or modified?

No. As of January 1, 2024, the ticket is non-refundable, and after payment, route modifications are not possible.

Is a refund granted in case of multiple fee payments?

Only if the duplicate payment for the same vehicle, section, and time period did not occur due to the customer's fault.

Can I purchase a route ticket for someone else?

Yes, but an incorrect license plate number, country code, or vehicle data cannot be corrected afterwards and will result in a fine.

What should be done in case of roadworks, an accident, or a detour?

If an officially designated detour is in place, no additional toll must be paid on that route. However, if the driver deviates from it or does not return to the original route at the first possible opportunity, it is considered unauthorized road use.

Can I use a cheaper parallel main road instead of the paid route?

No. The ticket is valid only for the planned and paid route. The system does not allow taking an alternative route to avoid a penalty.

What is an OBU and how does it work?

A GPS-based tracking device that automatically records toll sections and deducts the toll from the HU-GO account.

Is registration required?

Yes. Toll declaration with an OBU is only possible as a registered user (HU-GO portal).

Check before departure

OBU is switched on and functioning HU-GO account balance is sufficient Axle number (J-category) and environmental category are correct.

Can one OBU be used in multiple vehicles?

Yes, but it must first be unlinked from the previous license plate, then registered again for the new vehicle.

What happens if there is not enough balance?

The toll declaration will not be completed, which may result in unauthorized road use.

Where can I buy an OBU, and where can I get help with installation?

At audited toll declaration intermediaries and contracted partners – detailed list and consultation: aplus.hu or at our aPlus offices.
